Prevent Your Basement From Flooding With One Of These 4 Methods Of Waterproofing

If you have a basement, you should learn different ways of waterproofing it so you won't have to worry about it becoming flooded. When a basement floods, it can cause damage like mold and mildew growth, cracks in the walls, and damage to the flooring. Keep reading so you will not have to pay expensive repair bills.

Waterproof Paint

Waterproofing paint can be purchased at hardware or home improvement stores. It is applied to walls like any other paint using a brush or roller. This paint will seal up any small cracks in your basement walls, which will prevent water from seeping through them. This method works well if you do not have a lot of damage to your walls, such as large cracks. If you do have large cracks, you should hire a contractor to fix the damage before you apply the paint.

French Drain

A French drain involves digging a trench around the foundation of your home and laying perforated piping in the trench, along with a sump pump. The pump and piping redirects groundwater and surface water away from your home to another area, such as a local storm drain or another area of your yard, so the water will not go into your basement.

It would likely be difficult for you to install a French drain on your own unless you have excavation equipment to dig the trench. For this reason, you should hire a contractor to install this drain for you, as it is important that it is installed correctly.

Drain Tile System

If water comes up through your floor and walls, a drain tile system would work well for you. The first step of having this done is removing the basement floor around the inside perimeter. The contractors will use jack hammers to do this. Once the floor is removed, the contractor will install drain tiles and stone under the floor. The drain tile is connected to a sump pump or floor drain. The contractor will then drill holes in the drain tiles so the water will drain out into the tiles. When all of this is done, the floor will be replaced with new concrete.

Exterior Waterproofing

Exterior waterproofing prevents water from entering your foundation walls. If you choose this method, the contractor will excavate to the bottom sides of the foundation footings. Once the excavation is finished, the foundation walls are power-washed and then allowed to completely dry. Once dried, a waterproofing membrane is sprayed on the walls, and then weeping tiles are placed on the sides of the footing. The waterproofing membrane is generally made of a polymer-modified membrane, as this material is durable.

All of these products work well, and you may want to use a combination of them. Hire a contractor who can go over each one in much more detail to help you decide what would work best for your basement. Click hereto learn more about basement waterproofing.
